ATEX stands for Atmospheres Explosibles (explosive atmosphere), which is a directive for use of hazardous equipment and places, referred to two different European Union Directives; 94/9/EC the equipment directive and 1999/92/EC the use directive. These directives suggest that every individual working in an explosive atmosphere and/or hazardous environment should follow certain health and safety norms.

  • 94/9/EC Equipment Directive: exercises regulations to the companies engaged in manufacture and sale of explosive equipment.
  • 1999/92/EC Use Directive: adhered with the classification of dangerous and unsafe areas and the correct selection, inspection, installation and maintenance of explosive equipment.

However, European Union regulatory body has made an announcement that 94/9/EC Equipment Directive will be replaced with ATEX directive 2014/34/EU. This directive will be in effect from April 20, 2016 and will be mandatory for all the manufacturers and operators engaged in explosive atmosphere.

Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), UK is concerned with protection against the hazards from Atmospheres Explosibles. DSEAR regulates the EU ATEX directives for the places or industries from which explosion and similar events arises because of the use of dangerous substances in the workplace. According to DSEAR, equipment and products falls into two different ATEX categories:

  • Category I: the equipment used in the mines fall under this category.
  • Category II: comprise equipment intended for use in other locations endangered by explosive atmosphere.
